Partner investigations, semen analysis should happen alongside, not after, female investigations 3. Review results, your doctor discusses findings and recommends next steps 4. Referral to specialist, if needed, you're referred to a fertility clinic or gynaecologist 5. Specialist assessment, more detailed investigations, treatment planning 6. Treatment, lifestyle changes, medication, or assisted reproduction

The entire pathway from first appointment to starting treatment can take 6–18 months. Knowing this helps you plan and advocate for yourself.

What your doctor should offer at initial assessment: • Blood tests for hormones (FSH, LH, progesterone, thyroid, prolactin) • BMI and lifestyle discussion • Semen analysis for your partner • Chlamydia screening • Discussion of how long you've been trying and any relevant symptoms

Specialist investigations may include: • Pelvic ultrasound, checking ovaries (polycystic appearance, endometriomas) and uterus (fibroids, structural issues) • HSG (hysterosalpingogram), checking whether fallopian tubes are open (involves dye injection, can be uncomfortable) • AMH blood test, estimating ovarian reserve • Laparoscopy, keyhole surgery to look for endometriosis (not always needed) • More detailed hormone panels
